We definitely need to address mental illness in a better way. The odds that someone get through life without anxiety or depression or PTSD aren’t in our favor. Genetics can play a role, but what is more critical in education is teaching life skills to deal with the terrible things that happen in life. We need to start young--preschool young, teaching meditation, anger management, compassion, emotion recognition and cognition. Even though doctors try not to diagnose “adult” disorders in children, bipolar and other disorders in children can exist. I believe we could avoid more teen suicide and bullying if we taught our children how to recognize mental illness and ask for help.
