Storage Clutter
A tale of waiting to buy storage containers.
As background, I’m an organizational nerd. I’ve often gone to friends’ homes and helped them sort out where to put their things and taught them new ways to think about how to group their items. My personal organizational style is somewhere between Konmari and Swedish Death cleaning, but my focus is always on making my living spaces more functional. I consistently ask my friends to avoid purchasing storage containers before we organize. A lot of times, these clean up tasks end up with people getting rid of stuff (even if that wasn’t their goal to start with).
I recently encountered a book on minimalism that spent many chapters describing how to thoughtfully get rid of stuff, give stuff away, stop purchasing stuff, and how to get rid of people. (Apparently, minimalism tackles everything.) However, once the book pushed you to rid yourself of objects, it then instructed you to purchase ALL OF THE STORAGE.
I was very confused after receiving this advice. If you’re getting rid of stuff and avoiding purchases, why recommend spending money on more stuff? Why would you fill your functionally comfy living space with storage clutter?
