Reading the room refers to looking around at what is going on with people in the same space as you are (metaphorically) and acting accordingly. For example, no one tells jokes during a funeral service because it is a somber occasion of remembrance. Or being too serious at a comedy club when we’re meant to be laughing. In general, reading the room is about having the empathy for our fellow man and not being selfish about the needs or emotional support of others.
