Pandemic Banking

In July 2020, my husband and I moved from a house to an apartment.

We’d made the decision to put the money from our house sale into a more national bank. Even before Covid, managing our banking needs while out of town was difficult. A national bank promised extra employees and better service no matter what was happening outside.

We made the appointment to open a new bank account and were met at the door by a masked man who knew his stuff. He handled the extra-large check, our new bank accounts, and the safety deposit box we needed. It was a relief to have things go so smoothly.

Like most people, we handle most of our banking online away from potential infection. It worked well for us, except for dealing with the safe deposit box.

Over the next few months, every appointment my husband made was met by a masked employee. My husband ran through the things he needed to do quickly and moved on. We appreciated the brevity of contact in our banking relationship.

At least, until we moved again.

Our move took us back into the suburbs. My husband, as always, made his appointment online. When he showed up to the city branch bank, though, no one met him at the door. The cleaning crew was also trapped outside with my husband. After ten…
