Or maybe it's just the people that you know. I'm a Gen X-er, raised by the Greatest Generation, the Silent Generation, and a Boomer. I married another Gen X-er and my children are Millennials and Gen Z respectively. Having had access to all those people over the years, my perspective is somewhat different.

If you were raised by people who care--I assure you that you will learn to care (unless you're a sociopath). If you were raised by an absent parent, you will absolutely want better for you own children. And if you see where you can change things, you will make what changes you can.

The Gen X-ers I know hate superficiality and fake change. The Boomers I know are all in helping professions like social work and nursing. The Millennials I have access to are all self-starters and seeking monetary security/safety while navigating a system that they hate and keep trying to fix. And the Gen Z people? Are all working/getting schooling in fields that they can make changes in helping with climate, racial justice, and the like.

Those are the people I know. And I think that it's very true that the people you surround yourself with absolutely influence you and your beliefs. Generalizations aside, maybe the best way to affect change and prove you truly care is to actually seek out others who want to do the same. And then DO something about it.
