I've historically handled my non-functioning by hyperfocusing extra hard on the things people tell me I should (already) be better at. There are certain things that will never work with. Like knowing the days of the week or month. Knowing people's faces (yay, face blindness) or remembering their names (for even the friends I'm close to). Dealing with my extreme clumsiness and lack of personal spatial awareness. If I don't focus on a task completely, to this day, I still button my shirts wrong.
